Ingenious artist, rebel and restless soul, Michelangelo Merisi, better known as Caravaggio, is surely one of the most controversial characters in the history of Italian art. His life was divided between the aristocratic salons of its noble and ecclesiastical patrons and the taverns and gambling halls of the most infamous alleys of the city.
Through this tour we will know not only the artist Caravaggio, but also the man: passions, weakness, the rebellious and impetuous personality which threw him into fights and riots, such as the brawl which ended with the murder of Ranuccio Tomassoni and led him to flee Rome forever.
Caravaggio’s works are found in the most famous museums and collections of the world (among which unmissable is the collection of the Borghese Gallery), but the city of Rome offers us the unique occasion of admiring them without having to pay a ticket, we can see them in fact inside churches that were conceived by the painter himself! We will visit indeed the Cerasi Chapel inside Santa Maria del Popolo, the Contarelli Chapel inside San Luigi dei Francesi and the church of Sant’Agostino with its famous canvas “La Madonna dei Pellegrini” and understand why Caravaggio has been frequently charged with daring to represent sacred subjects too realistically, at the limits of respectability, adopting as models poor people and prostitutes from the Romans suburbs.
An unmissable itinerary which will lead us, walking through the most famous roads of the centre, to discover the sites frequented by the painter and to immerse ourselves in stories and legends, holy and profane, in the fascinating atmosphere of 17th century Rome.
